How ChatGPT can fail
ChatGPT is one product on a status page that covers much more. OpenAI's page lists the developer platform (Chat Completions, Responses, Embeddings, Images, Batch, Audio, Realtime, Files and others) alongside the ChatGPT product itself. A fault in one group does not always touch the other, so "OpenAI has a problem" and "ChatGPT is down" are not the same statement.
Our verdict follows the ChatGPT components, and a major outage of Conversations or Login is what makes us say "down". The developer platform components are not counted. Incidents that OpenAI posts for the whole page are shown for information but never change the verdict. We also test chatgpt.com ourselves every five minutes.
- Login and Conversations: Signing in and holding a chat. These two decide whether we call ChatGPT down.
- Voice mode, File uploads, Image Generation, Search, Deep Research, Agent, GPTs: Individual features. A problem here marks ChatGPT as having issues, because the main chat may still work.
- Developer platform: The API components. Not counted in our verdict.
API errors and what they mean
If you use the OpenAI API, these are the errors OpenAI documents. The number alone does not tell you whether OpenAI is at fault.
- 401: Authentication problem: a wrong or outdated key, a missing organisation, or a request from an IP address that is not on your allowlist. Not an outage.
- 403: Access is refused from your country, region or territory. Not an outage.
- 429: Several different causes: a rate limit reached, credit used up, a spend limit hit, a "slow down" signal after traffic grew too fast, or a usage quota. All are about your account, not a service fault.
- 500: A server error on OpenAI's side. OpenAI suggests retrying after a short wait and checking the status page if it continues.
- 503: The model is temporarily overloaded. This is on OpenAI's side. OpenAI suggests following the retry headers and backing off.

Does a 429 error mean ChatGPT is down?
Not necessarily. OpenAI's documentation lists several reasons for a 429, including rate limits, spend limits and used-up credit. Those are limits on your account, not a fault with the service.
