Our own check
Our checks can reach claude.ai (70 ms). For reference, api.anthropic.com answers.
We send an unauthenticated request to the service every five minutes. A sign-in or bot-protection reply still proves it is answering.

How Claude can fail
Anthropic's status page lists Claude's parts separately: claude.ai, the Claude Console (platform.claude.com), the Claude API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and Claude for Government. One can be struggling while the rest work normally.
Our verdict counts claude.ai, the API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork, and a major outage of claude.ai is what makes us say "down". A problem with the Console alone, or with Claude for Government, is named on this page but does not change the verdict, because it would not affect most people using Claude. We also test claude.ai ourselves every five minutes.
- claude.ai: The chat website and apps. This decides whether we call Claude down.
- Claude API and Claude Code: Developer access and the coding tool. Counted in our verdict.
- Claude Cowork: Counted in our verdict.
- Claude Console: The developer console. Shown if it has a problem, but not counted.
- Claude for Government: Not counted.
API errors and what they mean
If you use the Claude API, these are the errors Anthropic documents.
- 400: The request has a problem, or a spend limit you set has been reached.
- 401: A problem with your API key.
- 402: A billing or payment problem.
- 403: Your key does not have permission for that resource.
- 413: The request is larger than the allowed size.
- 429: Your organisation hit a rate limit or its monthly spend cap. A spend-cap 429 carries no retry delay and keeps failing until access resumes.
- 500: An unexpected error inside Anthropic's systems. Anthropic suggests retrying with exponential backoff.
- 504: The request timed out while being processed.
- 529: The API is temporarily overloaded. Anthropic says this can happen when traffic is high across all users.

If Claude is not working for you
Check the two signals above first. When both look healthy, try a different device or network, sign out and back in, and switch off any VPN or browser extensions. Hitting a usage limit can look like an outage, so check for a message about limits. Our guide has the full checklist, and another explains why a service can be up but broken for you.
Questions about Claude status
Is Claude down right now?
Claude looks up. We are not seeing any problems right now.
How can I tell if Claude is down for everyone or only for me?
Compare what you see with the two signals above. If Anthropic's status page and our checks both look healthy, the problem is likely your account, network, browser or a usage limit. Try another device or connection, sign out and back in, and turn off any VPN or browser extensions.
Where is the official Claude status page?
Anthropic publishes status information at https://status.claude.com.
How often is this page updated?
Our checks run every five minutes, so this page can lag a sudden outage by up to five minutes.
What does a 529 error from Claude mean?
Anthropic documents 529 as the API being temporarily overloaded, which can happen when traffic is high across all users. It points to the service, not to your account.
Why can the Claude Console be degraded while Claude is operational?
They are separate components on Anthropic's status page. The Console is the developer dashboard. If only the Console has a problem, we name it on this page but still show Claude as operational, because claude.ai and the API are what most people use.
